WEILL: AUFSTIEG UND FALL DER STADT MAHAGONNY - Madrid Symphony Orchestra, Pablo Heras-Casado (BLU-RAY)
|
| |
| Bel Air present the hard-hitting new production of Kurt Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny by Catalan collective, La Fura dels Baus, from the Teatro Real de Madrid. Composed in the 1930s by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, this is a mordant satire on capitalism in a society in which the ultimate crime is not having money. In 20 scenes the authors tell the story of a city lost in the middle of a desert and run by three thugs; in Mahagonny food, sex, gambling and violence rule supreme.
The production, by Alex Ollé and Carlus Padrissa of La Fura dels Baus, combines enormous inventiveness, joy and energy with awe-inspiring ferocity.
Perfect casting brings together a group of singers - Measha Brueggergosman, Michael König, Jane Henschel and Willard White - who are also marvellous actors. The Teatro Real Orchestra and Chorus are directed by young Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, who received the "El Ojo Crítico" prize in 2010, awarded annually to Spain's most outstanding artists.

MOZART: DIE ENTFUHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL (Uprowadzenie z Seraju) - Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, Zubin Mehta (BLU-RAY)
|
| |
| The unforgettable 'masterful use of light and silhouettes'(Milano Post) with which Giorgio Strehler interpreted the charm of Mozarts Singspiel was conceived for the Salzburg Festival, where it was staged in 1965 under the baton of then 29 year old Zubin Mehta, and then regularly revived at La Scala from 1972 onwards. At twenty years since the death of the great director, who from 1951 staged some by-now legendary operas at La Scala, Teatro alla Scala proposed anew this celebrated staging and called to the podium the man who conducted it the first time Zubin Mehta. 'Extraordinary, a wonder ' (Corriere Della Sera). The stage set with magnificent palace architecture and a sea view at centre is a veritable feast for the eyes, which is equally true for the elaborately and lovingly designed costumes. The viewer feels like hes being transported into the oriental aura. The fact that the current performance is conducted by Maestro Zubin Mehta, now over 80 years old, builds a bridge to Strehlers Salzburg production, which dates back more than half a century, and at the same time provides a touching detail of this timelessly monumental performance.

OFFENBACH: UN MARI A LA PORTE - Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Valerio Galli (BLU-RAY)
|
| |
| Recorded at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Offenbachs birth, Un mari a la porte (A Husband at the Door) is a one-act operetta premiered in 1859. This rarely performed work is a most amusing comedy of errors that mocks the quirks and vices of French society of that period. The action takes place in Susannes bedroom, on her wedding night. While alone, the bride realises that theres a man hidden under the bed. Florestan Ducroquet is a young and penniless musician who had broken into the room falling from the chimney, while escaping from the fury of a jealous husband. He manages to escape via the window, seconds after having proposed to Rosita. This carefree play of allusions and misunderstandings is accompanied by the brilliant music of Offenbach with its characteristic use of the polka, mazurka and waltz.

BRAHMS: THE COMPLETE SYMPHONIES - Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Paavo Järvi (BLU-RAY)
|
| |
| The Brahms interpretations of Paavo Järvi, the Grammy Award-winning Estonian-American conductor, and his Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen have been receiving the highest public and critical acclaim. 'A Brahms revelation' was the headline in the New Yorker, for the Zeit its 'a reference recording' and the Hamburger Abendblatt wrote 'the greatest experts of Brahms come from Bremen (die besten Brahms Versteher kommen aus Bremen)'. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen perform Brahms nowadays exactly to the size that the composer himself was accustomed to at the time. This interpretation puts Brahms' symphonies in a new light, which is explored in the additional documentary through the eyes of the musicians and their artistic director Paavo Järvi.

WEILL: STREET SCENE - Orchestra of Teatro Real de Madrid - Tim Murray (BLU-RAY)
|
| |
| Kurt Weill wrote Street Scene shortly after fleeing Nazi Germany to the United States. When he discovered the vitality of the American musical scene, his focus became to reconcile the Broadway musical with European traditional opera, jazzy and North-American tunes with an almost Puccinian-like lyricism. In his mind, opera had to embrace and reclaim its own theatricality: thus he wrote his Street Scene, meant to be a truly American opera, half-way between his Brechtian Threepennys Opera and Bernsteins later West Side Story and drawing from the famous play by Elmer Rice (recipient of the Pulitzer Price when it was published in 1928). Under Tim Murrays vivid and precise baton, this superb production by John Fulljames perfectly renders the vitality and energy released by the streets of New York that proved to be a great inspiration to the theatrical mind of the composer. |

TCHAIKOVSKY: EUGENE ONEGIN (Eugeniusz Oniegin) - Orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre, Alexander Vedernikov (BLU-RAY)
|
| |
| Three romantic heroes each with a solitary destiny: Tatiana, a Romanesque young woman seeking absolution, Onegin, a distant dandy hiding emptiness under affected haughtiness, and Lenski, abandoned by his literary idol. Between these three, barren affections presage the inexorable social ruin. All the resources of the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow are brought to bear to ensure this opera performance is exceptional evening of theatre and song: a vocal line-up of the highest order with notably the baritone Mariusz Kwiecien and the Bolshoi Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Alexander Vedernikov. With a stage setting as sombre as it is effective - a great dining table appears in the middle of a salon - the director Dmitri Tcherniakov separates two different worlds and lends the drama a clarity rarely reached. The exceptional quality of this production, and the great success encountered by its first edition on DVD, inevitably led to the remastering in high-definition of this program to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its original release. It is now and for the first time also available on Blu-ray. |

BACH: CHRISTMAS ORATORIO - Gewandhausorchester Leipzig - Gotthold Schwarz (BLU-RAY)
|
| |
| For many, the Christmas holiday season would be incomplete without the resounding drum roll and trumpet fanfare that opens Bach's "Oratorium auf die Heilige Weynacht" ("Oratorio for the holy Christmas"0. Ever since it was first performed by the Thomaskantor between Christmas Day in 1734 and Epiphany 1735 in Leipzig's two main churches of St Thomas and St Nikolai, Bach's six-part musical masterpiece has become a cornerstone of the city's identity and musical heritage. The performance presented here, led by Bach's 17th successor Gotthold Schwarz together with the Thomanerchor and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, features a lineup of renowned soloists, enabling one to experience the festive grandeur of what many consider the epitome of Christmas music in its original setting.
"Gotthold Schwarz transforms this into a Christmas Oratorio that is far more than a sum of its parts... his musical rhetoric avoids cheap gimmicks and vain showmanship." - Peter Korfmacher, LVZ

MOZART: DIE ZAUBERFLOTE (Czarodziejski Flet) - Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra & Constantinos Carydis (BLU-RAY)
|
| |
| Ponadczasowe arcydzieło W.A.
Out of Africa, James Bond). Ta "sztuczka" w połączeniu z gigantycznymi ruchomymi dekoracjami scenograf Kathariny Schlipf pozwala na nowe, magiczne spojrzenie na operę Mozarta.
Znakomitej wiedeńskiej orkiestrze filharmonicznej towarzyszył Constantinos Carydis, specjalista z XVIII-wiecznej opery, który sprawił, że tradycyjna wiedeńska orkiestra zagrała świeżo i barwnie./d
